The Profound Influence of Music!

What an amazing start of the month for me, with a musical weekend at Smyrna International. Both the Saturday Women’s Meeting and the Sunday Worship Service solidified their messages with cool original music compositions and performances…lots of fun and power!

It’s reminded me of my childhood, growing up with four siblings under a musical mother. I fondly reminisce the numerous random times mum would teach us songs to instil a value she wanted us to grasp. It felt like she always had a song for every word you mentioned. We were constantly singing in the morning, before meals, when grieving, when rejoicing, during family meetings, before sleep…. all the time. In fact just yesterday when I was talking to her on the phone, I mentioned something and she burst out in song (typical). What was more interesting was that two of my siblings were in her midst and they too started singing different songs but with the same message. I guess the apple does not fall far from the tree 🙂

The influence of music is profound! As much as it appeals to both our physical and emotional make up , It also has spiritual effects. It is a tool that has potential to heal diseases, deliver from demonic bondages, bring victory, encourage, and much more positive value when inspired by the Holy Spirit. However, it has the capacity to do the exact opposite when not inspired by the Holy Spirit.

It is thus important as believers, to be cautious of what we are listening to musically for two reasons among others. Firstly, due to the power of the words in the music. Music nowadays seems to revolve around the beat, loosing the quality of  the lyrics. In fact, it seems that the more vulgar and meaningless the lyrics are, the more the song sells. We in turn are hooked to a beat and end up professing words contrary to our beliefs and our prayer requests, then we wonder and question why answers to our prayers are not forthcoming and why our spiritual lives are stagnating. Life and death are in the power of the tongue. When we confess words that are not in line with the word of God due to the trappings of a good beat, this can be detrimental to our spiritual growth.

Secondly, due to the “source” of the music. You see, the devil is the father of all lies and only comes to deceive, hiding behind disguises that can seemingly look innocent but with the same purpose that is his nature: to kill, to steal and to destroy. He is empowering artists in the music industry to prosper in their career as he influences the root and dispensation of the music. The effects are as he is; sweet and deadly! I have witnessed the manifestation of music inspired by the devil and heard testimonies of people who found their deliverance from immorality, demons, anger etc, once they stopped listening to some specific music. Beware!

I leave you with these words, “walk in the Spirit and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh”. God’s wisdom and direction through the Holy Spirit is a constant help in our walk on this narrow path.

Enjoy the profound positive influence of music, it is a wonderful gift from God!
