Let Go!

Yesterday was the third session of my fall dance class, teaching a group of wonderful ladies some choreography which we’re totally loving and rocking. The style in focus is afro-funk which has it’s root in African dance and the concept I reinforce is “more fun and less technique”…just let go!

Having taught this dance style for a couple of years now, to a multi-cultural people who have mostly not had prior experience, there’s so much I have observed that’s really interesting. It’s the capacity to embrace the unknown , the willingness to be instructed, the response to the different movements, the individual expression of the choreography and my favourite; the capability to let go.

It’s thrilling to observe a student move from a reserved nature of thinking they are incapable of mimicking the “ridiculous” dance moves, to completely letting go, having fun and making the moves their own.

Not until yesterday, had I ever imagined being both the observer and the observed.  As the session came to an end, one of the ladies requested that I take them through a cool-down routine with compliments of some nice slow music. Cool-down, what? Oh dear!

Now, there’re two things you have to know about me, unique to this situation:

  1. I have never had to cool down in all my life. All these warming up, stretching and now cooling down, are a new thing for me. I’ve just been dancing with no need of it all.
  2. I like to be well prepared for my classes (as I guess all teachers do too) from the music choice, dance moves and order of events.

So what this lady was telling me in other words was to let go of my control, oh dear! Did I say “oh dear” already? Oh dear!

As I observed myself, I was wondering whether to ignore her or to let go and take up the challenge. Shortly, I had put some soft African jungle tune on which apparently had a nice cool-down beat. Then I got my improvising mode on, pretty much winging it as I went along. I couldn’t look into the mirror because I didn’t want to laugh and loose the flow. I was on the spot but they had no idea, I was coping with it as though i’d done this all my life…I let go and I enjoyed it! In fact, I can’t wait to cool down on my next session. 🙂

This reminded me of my lifestyle of faith in Jesus Christ. Everyday is a real good adventure, always wondering how God will work in and through me. One has to have the divine capacity to let go and embrace the unknown.

I have found out that :

The more we surrender to God, the more we experience His power in and through our lives.
The more we allow Jesus to be Lord over areas of our lives, the more we lead a life of purpose.
The more we let go, the more we grow!

Many times The Lord will build our character in the most uncomfortable and humbling situations which will require us to let go of our defences, images, cultures, pasts, habits, egos, concerns, self-righteousness, relationships and just let faith express itself through love.

It’s all worth it if God’s in it!

When we declare Jesus as Lord, it means that we give Him the place of control and authority, He is our Master and Owner.

Let’s just let go!
